Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe

We remember today Mary, who appeared to Juan Diego as a pregnant woman. This happened at a time when the Inca Empire practiced human sacrifices and cannibalism. Years after her appearance, that practice stopped, proving the power of our Lady to conquer the evils of society. The First Reading shows us when God comes, all peoples are called to be silent because he has roused himself from his dwelling. Before the Son of God became man, God appointed a woman to be his Mother. This woman appears before the coming of her Son.
When Mary appears, we know her Son will come soon to judge the nations. Guadalupe proves God has come to judge the land, when child sacrifice and cannibalism stopped and instead, the worship of the One True God flourished in the land. The Second Reading shows us how Mary again appears before her Son, the One who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. This is why we call on Mary so that the evils we see today will be conquered soon. And we know these evils will be conquered soon, because they are getting worse. This is the final throes of evil, the final push to destroy the image of God, in the womb and in marriage. But we know, with our Lady, the evil will be conquered because as she said in the Magnificat, he has regarded the humility of his handmaid... he has shown the might of his arm, he has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He has put down the mighty from their thrones and has exalted the lowly.
Evil is not defeated by human strength. Evil is defeated by the power of God through our obedience before the Lord. When God comes he will scatter the proud in their conceit. He will pull down the mighty from their thrones. This evil in society will end, because our God has proven to be victorious. But we need to fight this war under the authority of Jesus Christ, who sends his Mother before him, to teach her children the way to conquer evil: submission and obedience to God.
Our Lady of Guadalupe has said God will bring down the mighty centuries ago. And he did when the human sacrifices ended. God will bring down those who are mighty today, those who reject him, those who mock him, those who persecute him through his believers. The mighty will fall. The proud will scatter, because God is always victorious and only he will remain.
If you are in a situation where you think you are overwhelmed by evil, if you have done something evil and think God cannot forgive you, come to him with boldness before the throne of grace to receive mercy in time of need. How do we know that God will hear us? Because he said so in his Word. The Word, delivered to us through this Woman clothed with the sun, who has crushed the head of the serpent through her humility and love for God. Your Mother wants to lead you to her Son Jesus. Do not be afraid. She is the only human being who knows her Son best. Come to her and she will reveal her Son to you and you will find rest.
Lord Jesus, you sent your Mother to prepare your coming to judge me. I come to you afraid and confused, overwhelm by my sin, by my guilt. Overwhelmed by evil in my life. Yet Lord, I believe you can deliver me from evil if I humble myself to you. Here I am, take away this sin, this guilt, this evil surrounding my life because I do not want them any more. I reject them Lord and all I want is you. Our Lady of Guadalupe, lead me to Jesus. Teach me to humble myself to him, so God can do to me according to his Word, so he can raise me up, to victory over evil.
