Reflection 2020-10-02 Friday 26th Week in Ordinary Time – Guardian Angels

Exodus 23:20-23; Psalm 91; Matthew 18:1-5, 10
How do we know angels are real? Jesus said so in the Gospel today Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you, their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven. Everyone of us has a guardian angel but what is their role in our lives? The First Reading shows us God telling Moses he will send his angel in front of you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. Guardian angels guard us so we can live righteous lives, that please the Father. There is however an expectation to this: be attentive to him and listen to his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression; for my name is in him. But if you listen attentively to his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes. We are expected to obey them because God’s name is with them.
We see here, angels are messengers of God, they serve God and do what God wants. They guide us the way God wants to guide us. They defend us against evil spirits that strive to prevent us from achieving what God wants us to do. The Psalm tells us: the angel of the Lord will guard you in all your ways. When we obey them, we can expect their protection and their presence. When we disobey, we can expect them to withdraw from us. They will not protect us when we reject them, because they will respect our decision.
St Paul said in Ephesians 6 we battle not human beings, but principalities and powers of darkness, spiritual beings who desire to prevent us from reaching the place God has prepared for us. Since our guardian angels are spirits also, they are more powerful than us, and can defend us against these evil spirits. Angels are subject to God and since Jesus is God, he is also far above all rule and authority, power and dominion (Ephesians 1:21). Jesus is above all creation so angels serve him also.
Lord, send your mighty angels to protect me from harm, to deliver me to the place you have prepared for me. May I be obedient to them so I can live with you. Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom his love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side. To light and guard, to rule and guide.
