Homily 2020-09-18 – Saturday 24th Week in Ordinary Time – Our Lady of La Sallete

Genesis 9:8-17; Judith 13:18-20; 2 Corinthians 5:17-20; John 19:25-27
Our Lady appeared to Melanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud on September 19th 1846 at La Sallete, France. This is a one time appearance and she gave them a public message and to each, a private message. Melanie then said the Lady continued speaking after giving the public message because she was giving Maximin his secret. After that, she gave Melanie her secret. The public message mentioned two sins: the first sin is working on the day of rest. This is applicable today because even with this lockdown, we see people so occupied they have forgotten how to rest or honor the Lord on Sundays. The second sin is blasphemy against the name of Jesus. This is also applicable today because the name of the Lord is often used as a curse rather than a blessing even in normal conversation. Our Lady tells us: These are the two things that weigh down the arm of my Son so much. She also said: If my people do not wish to submit themselves, I am forced to let go of the hand of my Son. It is so heavy and weighs me down so much I can no longer keep hold of it. The apparition at La Sallete is said to be the first of the modern apparitions, that include, Lourdes and Fatima. In all these apparitions, she calls for repentance to delay the punishment that is to come.
Which is why Our Lady of La Sallete is also called the Reconciler of Sinners. She is as St Paul described himself in the Second Reading, an ambassador for Christ, God as it were appealing through us. We implore you, in Christ’s name: be reconciled to God! Being the Mother of God, she knows the mind of Christ. She, whom Christ gave to us on the Cross, knows what offends him which is why she begs us to be reconciled with God and stop sinning!
Melanie also wrote the secret our Lady gave her. The secret is controversial because it mentioned events by specific dates but did not happen. Which puts to question whether the prophecies are authentic or not. This is one of the reasons why, when we should not give importance to prophecies in private revelations especially those with dates, because we do not know whether the dates are symbolic or conditions were met that cause the prophecies not to happen. Besides, if we strive to live in holiness, why should we be afraid of what will come? So for the secret like the one given at La Sallete, we look at the warnings. We can read the prophecies but must discern carefully what they mean.
Most of the warnings are relevant even today, part of it is as follows: Bad books will abound over the earth, and the spirits of darkness will everywhere spread universal relaxation in everything concerning God's service: they will have very great power over nature; there will be churches to serve these spirits. People will be transported from one place to another by these evil spirits, and even priests, because they will not have lived by the good spirit of the gospel, which is a spirit of humility, charity and zeal for the glory of God. There will be extraordinary wonders every place because the true faith has been extinguished and false light illumines the world. Woe to the princes of the church who will be occupied only with piling up riches upon riches, with guarding their authority and lording with pride!
Towards the end of the secret, the message reminds the faithful: Go, show yourselves to be my dear children; I am with you and in you, provided your faith is the light enlightening you in these evil times. May your zeal make you famished for the glory and honor of Jesus Christ. Do battle, children of light, you, the few who see thereby; for the time of times, the end of ends, is at hand.
While the world descends into the vortex of evil and death, Our Lady calls us to live our faith and be zealous for the glory and honor of Jesus Christ. She calls us to battle by living in holiness, even if the world around us will not. Which is why at this mass, we ask our Lady to help us to turn to God in repentance of sin. During the consecration, we consecrate our hearts to God and ask him to transform our hearts of stone to a heart of flesh so we can obey him through Jesus Christ. We become holy by trusting God and obeying him and not by trusting any human authority, because no matter how holy we think they are, they will fail, because everyone including myself, fall short of God’s expectations. Our Blessed Mother knows this battle for our eternal destiny is won when we live in contempt of the world and of ourselves, in poverty and humility, in contempt and silence, in prayer and in mortification, in chastity and in union with God, in suffering and unknown to the world. Then, with our Lady, we will crush the head of the serpent because when God does to us according to his Word, God does great things for us and he will be adored, served and glorified, through Jesus Christ our Lord, now and forever.
