Little sons, it is the last hour. And, as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have arrived. By this, we know that it is the last hour. They went out from among us, but they were not of us. For, if they had been of us, certainly they would have remained with us. But in this way, it is made manifest that none of them are of us. Yet you have the anointing of the Holy One, and you know everything. I have not written to you as to ones who are ignorant of the truth, but as to ones who know the truth. For no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar, other than he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This one is the Antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.
1 John 2:18-22
John was writing to a community where a lot of opinions were being taught as the truth. John points out that these teachers are from their community but not of their community. It seems like the problem of people of authority teaching opinions as truth has been going on since the beginning of the Church. Which is why we should not be surprised why today, we have theologians, priests, bishops who preach their own opinion on morality and other issues.
As a Catholic, how can I know the truth if there are people in authority teaching things contrary to what the Church teachers. John gave the answer: Who is a liar, other than he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? What does this statement mean?
When we say Jesus is the Christ, we accept his authority, that what he says is the Truth. We know something is true because the Church has taught it consistently for 2000 years! The current sex scandals in the Church is proof that many antichrists (enemies of Christ) are from the Church but not of the Church. These are leaders who preach their own opinions, denying and twisting the Truth proclaimed by Jesus Christ. They may be from the Church, even from the Church hierarchy, but they do not belong to the Church. They use their position to advance their own agenda, confusing the people they are supposed to protect.
The scary part is these act as if they are not afraid of facing the judgment of Christ, as if what there will be no consequence on their souls. As faithful Catholics, we must start pushing back on antichrists like these. We must call them out when they use their authority to teach error.
The only way to combat the lies promoted these antichrists is to live in holiness. While Catholics have to demand holiness from the clergy, Catholic laity should also to live in holiness. Holiness is possible only when we submit to the teaching of Christ. All truths must be based on the teaching of Jesus Christ because he is the Way that leads to the Father so we can have eternal Life in him.
May the Lord continue to lead us to him as we speak the truth and fight for the truth proclaimed by Jesus Christ through his Apostles.
