Today is the
feast of St Matthew today. St Matthew was a tax collector who dropped
everything and followed Jesus when Jesus called him. He later went on
to write his version of the Gospel that bears his name. His version
of the Gospel was one of the four versions that record the Church’s
understanding of Jesus and of his teaching. The sad thing today is
despite the consistent teaching of the Church through centuries, many
have rejected the teaching of the Apostles and claim to know the
truth about Jesus Christ. Which is why in North America alone, we
have more than 30,000 Christian communities who claim they know the truth. By
doing so, they destroy the unity of the Church and go against what St
Paul stressed in the first reading: there is one body and one
Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one
Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above
all and through all and in all.
Amen, Amen, I say to you, he who does not enter through the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up by another way, he is a thief and a robber. But he who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
But I have a few things against you. For you permit the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce my servants to commit fornication and to eat the food of idolatry.
This is the last group of people whose teachings are condemned in the letters to the churches.
Jezebel may be her real name or it can be a name used to associate this false prophet with the Old Testament Jezebel. In the Old Testament, Jezebel was the wife of Ahab, the king of Israel. She promoted idolatry in the kingdom and killed most of the prophets of the God if Israel. She also did a lot of evil things on behalf of the king. Idolatry flourished in the reign of her husband that the religion of the God of Israel almost died during his reign. This was when Elijah came to challenge the prophets of Baal. Elijah won the challenge and massacred the prophets of Baal.
In any case, Jesus describes her as a prophetess. She probably had some official status to speak the Word of God. She uses her position to seduce believers into committing fornication and idolatry. This fornication can be actual sexual immorality or it can be figurative fornication which is idolatry. The key word here is the word seduce. It is as if she presents what she is saying as beautiful and good to seduce people to believe her. What is interesting is verse 21 where Jesus said she is not willing to repent from her fornication. This looks like she herself was involved in sexual immorality.
Who are the Jezebels today? These may be men or women who use their Church position to pronounce words in the name of God. They say things that are good to hear. They eloquently present their ideas and thoughts at the same time, even using Scripture to lead people into either actual sexual immorality or rejection of God.
Today, we have many people who claim to be teachers of the Word, who talk well, who present their opinions as true, who claim to have teaching authority in the Church yet seduce people to believe in them. The people, not knowing any better, fall into the lies of Jezebel. They seduce people to sin so that they can continue with their own wicked ways.
Beware of false prophets!!! There are many of them recently. One even composed a prayer, quoting Scripture to promote sin. One has been spreading heretical teaching, encouraging sin.
Lord, reveal the lies of people like Jezebel. May they not deceive any true believer. Expose them never let them succeed in their wicked plans.
Today, is Fr
John’s 40th Year as a priest. This is something to thank
God for and celebrate. It is also something to reflect on. When I was
ordained last year, there were thoughts of doubts, of a sense of
unworthiness. While the priest’s ordination is different from a
Deacon’s I would think Fr John experienced those emotions also.
Yet, he willingly and courageously answered God’s call. Which makes
one ask, Why would a young man 40 years ago, with the whole world
before him, give up everything to serve God? Who is this God that Fr
John worships, loves and serves? It is quite fitting we celebrate
the Solemnity of the Trinity today because the Trinity is the God
whom Fr John worships and serves. It is also fitting that we
celebrate Father’s day today, since Fr John is our Spiritual
Been reading Revelation. In Chapter 2, Jesus admonishes the Angel of Ephesus and then says in 2:6, "But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate." This got me to wonder who these Nicolaitans are.
Little sons, it is the last hour. And, as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have arrived. By this, we know that it is the last hour. They went out from among us, but they were not of us. For, if they had been of us, certainly they would have remained with us. But in this way, it is made manifest that none of them are of us. Yet you have the anointing of the Holy One, and you know everything. I have not written to you as to ones who are ignorant of the truth, but as to ones who know the truth. For no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar, other than he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This one is the Antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.
