I call heaven and earth as witnesses this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore, choose life, so that both you and your offspring may live, and so that you may love the Lord your God, and obey his voice, and cling to him, (for he is your life and the length of your days) and so that you may live in the land, about which the Lord swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that he would give it to them.
This is part of the discourse of Moses to the children of Israel before they entered the Promised Land. God is giving them a choice: life or death and God commands them to choose life. This message also holds for everyone. God gives us a choice: life or death and what happens to our life depends on our choice.
If we choose life, our lives should be one of loving God, obedience to him and clinging to him. Loving God is different from knowing God or believing he exists. It is to choose him above anything else. There should be nothing or no one more important to us than God. This is a choice we must personally make.
Love translates to obedience. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will obey my commandments”. Obedience is proof of our love for God. This means one obeys the commands of God and of his Church. If a person picks and chooses what they want to follow, that love is selective and is not real love. Love is unconditional and it means we accept everything God says whether we like it or not.
The last thing we do is to cling to God. This is to trust in him. We obey out of trust in the Lord. We cling to God even in times of difficulties and trouble because we know God loves us.
God wants us to have life. And this is why Jesus became man so God can enter into humanity and be in our lives.
Christ needs to incarnate into our lives. We need to let him enter our lives so we can have life. Jesus said, “I am the Resurrection and the Life”. The Resurrection is not only an event. It is a Person. Life is not something. It is a Person: Jesus Christ. For us to have life, we need to accept him as Lord and Savior. Let him take charge of our life as we respond to him in love, obedience and trust.
Lord, I accept you into my life. Be the Lord of my life. Help me to love you and trust you and obey you.
