Wisdom: Seeing Through God's Eyes

But if anyone among you is in need of wisdom, let him petition God, who gives abundantly to all without reproach, and it shall be given to him.
James 1:5

Wisdom is the only gift of the Spirit we are guaranteed to receive when we ask. I think the reason is because Wisdom is the basis for all the other gifts. Wisdom may be the basis of all the other gifts of the Spirit, possessing it does not guarantee that one will live a righteous life.

The proof of this is Solomon, whom scripture calls the wisest man in his time. He asked God to give him wisdom and God gave him wisdom. Great people come to him to seek his advice. Yet, sadly, he misused his wisdom. He allowed his many wives to lead his people away from God. Wisdom is a gift from God and should be used for the glory of God.

Scripture tells us at least three times that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This fear is not the feeling of being afraid of the Lord. It is being in awe of the Lord, a sense of reverence for God. This sense of reverence leads people to trust in the Lord.

Those who trust in the Lord will do things the Lord wants and  see things through the eyes of God. When this happens, it is God's perspective that guides a person instead of human intelligence.

We see today many people who use their God-given wisdom and intelligence to preach falsehood or like Solomon, lead other people to sin against God. Some totally reject God. Scripture has something to say about them, “The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'. They are corrupt, their deeds are vile. There is no one who does good.” This is quite a sad situation because despite their intelligence, God still sees them as fools!

Disciples of Christ must be more discerning in what we hear. 1 John 4:1 tells us, “Discern all spirits”.  We should not just accept whatever we hear because it comes from someone with a lot of fancy degrees. Someone once told me that heresies come from intelligent theologians.

If there is anything the Church teaches that we do not agree with, it is our responsibility to seek the truth and not just ignore it. search for the answer and God will reveal it to you.

If we are in a situation where we need to make a major decision in our lives, ask God for wisdom and he will give it abundantly. Wisdom is a gift from God and we are guaranteed to receive it when we ask.

Lord, give me the humility to see things through your eyes.

  1. Yes, it is indeed a very sad situation when people would rather believe anything else other than God who gave them life. We need to pray for them as they are still our brothers & sisters in Christ.
